Matt Penny is a journeyman of magic, literally! He started big time in London and then became a family man in Perth with the trickster force still strong in him that I am sure that he will be performing to his grave. What makes Penny special is his natural charm – so comfortable at any outcome that you embrace that he may have a hiccup, as it represents his rollercoaster life journey! Penny gives a synopsis of his career as a magician from his early day, to his peak of performing to Penn and Teller, to being a Last Resort Magician.
Set upstairs in the old, iconic night club of Perth Metros – an odd setting for a softly spoken, laid back character. By the end of the night you realise that this setting is perfect for Penny – summing up his willingness to give anything a go. Penny is easily someone you could chill out with ease in the way stories flow from his mouth, with quick ability to change speed and direction. Penny mentions in his show that he specialised in close-up magic but what is amazing is his ability to combine multiple audience members to create mind bending mentalism. Penny holds to attention of the audience from start to finish – where he ends by people signing up for a drawing, he did during the tough COVID times of 2020.
If you have seen Penny before in the many festivals and variety nights, you will experience his personal favourite jokes and bits of magic. There is a sense of nostalgia that this funny illusionist delivers with warmth and spot on timing. Even if Penny knows any audience member, he will make a joke about it, creating a great feel of fun and spontaneity.
Penny might not by groundbreaking, but he represents what FRINGEWORLD 2021 is about sincere performances that leave you smiling. If you are sick of slick, loud magicians, Matt Penny: Last Resort Magician is a must-see act!
