FRINGEWORLD 2022 | Me, My Cult and I | 5 Stars

Review | Peter Spence

Refreshing, real, comical, raw, cathartic and captivating! Here is a show that will take you through the widest range of emotions, making you actually feel something, stronger than anything any other act can make you feel.

Laughter – and plenty of it, as you would expect from one of Perth’s most established comedians, Colin Ebsworth, who has been on the scene since his teens, and still going strong almost a decade later. A FRINGEWORLD main stay, his award nominated performances have sold out countless shows over the years.

Let’s be honest though, with the title Me, My Cult and I, and with the show description telling us it was about him growing up in a cult family, we are ALL here to hear some crazy stories about life within a cult, and to be honest we aren’t disappointed.

What we weren’t betting on was the raw emotional rollercoaster of depth into the most interesting lifetime of the Ebsworth family. Not a typical slide-night at your grandparents, but with a few pictures for reference, Ebsworth brings us in and gives us an autobiography worth watching. Crazy cult stories – don’t worry they are there, and they are as entertaining as you could ever imagine, and some you wouldn’t want believe!

A dark yet beautiful view of a family who were more than met the eye, which laid the personal foundation to one of the most entertaining people in the comedy scene and FRINGEWORLD 2022. A born entertainer, Ebsworth takes a step aside from his comedy roots and live late-night shows, to bring you a show that will make you laugh a real laugh and cry a real tear. Certainly a more refreshing take on a show than anything else you’ll see this year.

You can join the cult at The Goodwill Club until 13th February 2022 with an extra show on the 17th. TICKETS

FRINGEWORLD 2022 | Musical Comedy Showcase | 3.5 Stars

Review | Laura Money

Do you like to laugh? Love a good tune? Well we have the show for you! Musical Comedy Showcase is exactly what it says on the tin – a roving line-up of comedians provide an evening of musical comedy. It’s full of hilarious lyrics and devised songs but also some changed words to famous songs. Hosted by musical comedy act Matt Storer, you’re not sure what you’re going to get but being serenaded by a bunch of funny people is definitely guaranteed!

Storer specialises in musical comedy, so he’s the perfect host for a show like this. His comedy is pertinent, if a little predictable – tackling topics such as average performance time during love-making, and peeing while sitting down the songs are catchy and funny and Storer clearly knows his audience. Each night is different, so it’s not the easiest to review but rest assured that all of the acts are either musical comedians or have a musical element to their segment. On the night I attended, we were treated to the hilarious Tomas Ford with his offbeat brand of funny – his ABBA sex dream song is perfection, and the legendary Don Smith singing one of the funniest songs about Girrawheen ever written!

Musical Comedy Showcase isn’t exactly groundbreaking comedy, but it is a great night out where you can relax with a drink at The Goodwill Club and raise the roof – well the floor as it’s in the basement.

You can catch all the funny songs at The Rechabite’s Goodwill Club until 30th January 2022. TICKETS

FRINGEWORLD 2022 | Rory Lowe -Certified Funny Boy | 4.5 stars

Review | Peter Spence

Changing the world, one fistful of sand at a time, and owning comedy one show at a time, Rory Lowe is absolutely killing it in the comedy scene. Taking Perth FRINGEWORLD 2022 by storm!

After traveling the world with his stand up acts, animating and voice acting, Lowe was locked down and left to his own devices, bringing out even more of the hilarious comedy he is already known for. Giving us stories from his past with a little more information than most are expecting to his surprises in some scary looking islanders. Fast paced and non stop, the jokes are funnier every year and the crowd interaction is spot on. Enough to make you blush and to give you a stomach work out from all the laughing. Come and find out why he is scoring so many GOAT (greatest of all time) ‘crowd reactions’ for this year’s Fringe Feed.

Selling out almost every show last year and this year has kept Lowe busy, but has not slowed him down for one second. This Perth boy can be seen across multiple venues, starring in an insurmountable amount of shows all across the festival, challenging the clock and putting in some serious kilometres. Downstairs at the Rechabite’s Goodwill Club, we are not given a second to catch our breath between chuckles. No one is safe, not even if you are just a young one with your parents, a life lesson in the comedic world is still in store, which is likely to bring a shade of red to your cheeks.

You can catch Rory Lowe at The Goodwill Club until 13th February 2022. TICKETS
