Favourite part of the show, no spoilers!

The finale of the show is ridiculous and makes me laugh every time!

I think that my show gives people an opportunity to look behind the curtain and see that there is always much more to someone’s life than is seen on the surface.

Karen from Finance’s ‘Doing Time’ – I love her character and her comedy.

FRINGEWORLD, Interview

Five With Fringe | Daniel Muggleton | How The Whitey Have Fallen | FRINGEWORLD 2023

Sydney-based comedian Daniel Muggleton is in Perth for FRINGEWORLD 2023. We caught up with him to see what his show is all about.

What is your show about?

It’s about how once I had to pay $1 per hour to park in the Wollongong CBD (very loose definition of CBD here) and I just don’t understand the logic. It’s 2023, nothing costs $1 except a Big Mac for a few days in November. Why bother charging a transaction fee as a price? That’s not even gonna cover the cost of printing the ticket let alone the cost of a parking inspector chalking my tyres and meeting quotas. Seriously, ‘living’ is so expensive now that I’m considering polyamory just to enter the property market.

Favourite part of the show, no spoilers!

The bit where I say I love my wife the appropriate number of times, because if you say it more than that people think you’re covering something up… but what’s the magic number?

What do you think people will get out of your show?

Not much, TBH. Maybe a picture with me if they ask nicely?

Apart from your show, what other shows would you recommend?

It’s hard to go past Andrew Wolfe, a true lunatic that as an audience you get to view from an almost-safe distance. Amos Gill is one of my best mates and one of the best comedians in the country so definitely worth a look as well. I’m always a big fan of Brodi Snook, met her in the UK, we both bailed during COVID… that’s a lasting friendship you know? Oh and Michael Shafar just invited me to his wedding and I don’t plan on giving him a gift so check out his show for me as a quid-pro-quo? Cheers.

Describe your show in 3 words:

Twenty-Nine. Dollar. Tickets.

You can catch Daniel Muggleton in action at The Goodwill Club, The Rechabite until 29th January 2023. TICKETS

Interview, on now, Summer Nights

Sum Up Summer Nights | 600 Seconds crew | SUMMER NIGHTS 2023

600 Seconds is a hot new program playing at The Blue Room Theatre as part of Summer Nights 2023. We caught up with the creative folks running the program to find out what it’s all about.

What is 600 SECONDS?

600 SECONDS are short works programs that run throughout The Blue Room Theatre’s Summer Nights. These programs are a training ground for performance that puts makers through their paces to create and present a 10-minute short work.

There’ll be five shorts in each 600 SECONDS program, and there’s three programs to choose from: storytelling and theatre in HIIT (High Intensity Interval Theatre), dance with MOVEMOVEMOVE, and experimental late-night spots in AFTER HOURS. Each week of Summer Nights will have a new program.

Favourite part of the show, no spoilers!

The variety! A 600 SECONDS program is like seeing five shows in one. Plus, each program is going to be so unique as they span different artforms and practices. I’m also excited to see what our program curators and mentors bring to the experience – poet & theatre maker Andrew Sutherland (HIIT), dancer Janine Oxenham (MOVEMOVEMOVE), and performance artist legend Ash Baroque (AFTER HOURS). They not only curated the line-ups but have been working closely with our 600 SECONDS artists to turn their ideas into a 10-minute performance piece.

How important is the Summer Nights program to the Perth theatre scene?

Perth comes alive during the summer festival season and it’s a good time for a little spontaneity. For audiences, Summer Nights and particularly 600 SECONDS is a welcoming and warm way to experience live performance and get to know The Blue Room Theatre. For artists, being in a festival line-up means they can develop new audiences, reveal something new to their existing following, and connect with other artists.

What inspired this program?

We wanted to offer a low-stakes platform for veterans of our stages to try a whacky new idea and for fresh faces who want a chance to shine. Our program artists have the opportunity to test out the nugget of an idea, work with a brilliant mentor, turn their idea into a 10-minute performance piece, be part of a five-show line-up, and from there … who knows! We produce and tech 600 SECONDS in-house, which means the artists can focus on being creative – not admin. 600 SECONDS also exists for audiences who can’t decide what to see during the busy summer festival season. This sort of tasting plate of performance is appealing and adds a lot of energy to Summer Nights.

Describe your show in 3 words:

Fresh, Energetic, Assortment

You can catch all of the 600 SECONDS shows throughout Summer Nights finishing on 11th February 2023. TICKETS

FRINGEWORLD, Interview, on now

Five With Fringe | Joe White | Ethiopian and Still Not Hungry – 2023 | FRINGEWORLD 2023

Joe White has been bringing his show Ethiopian and Still Not Hungry to Perth for years now. We caught up with him to see what’s changed and what we’re in for!

What is your show about?

This show starts with the funniest stories from my three months tour of the USA. I talk about how I had to catch a 4-day bus ride from LA to NYC instead of a 4-hour flight. To hear the things that happened on that 4-day bus ride alone is worth the ticket to the show. It was an insane experience but I will never do it again.

I also did a show in Manhatten, New York with Mike Reiss who is the co-writer of the Simpsons and he helped me tweak one of my jokes which was an absolute pleasure because I grew up watching the Simpsons, buy a ticket to the show and come hear the joke.

Lastly, in the show, I share funny stories about my mum, and siblings and the challenges of transitioning into the Australian way of life, the language barrier, being an uncle, and my brother’s interracial marriage to the loveliest human from Harvey in WA, Emily.

This show has it all and it’s my best work to date.

Favourite part of the show, no spoilers!

My favorite part of the show is always the crowd work, I am known to think quickly on my feet so this makes getting to know my crowd one of my favorite experiences. The audiences love it, these moments always end up being so good that people come back again and again with friends to experience them.

What do you think people will get out of your show?

An hour of belly laughs, a taste of the Ethiopian culture through my funny family stories. An understanding of the challenges refugees face when transitioning into the Australian way of life. They say tragedy + time = comedy and it has been over 20 years since arriving in Australia as a refugee which means its time for the comedy!

Apart from your show, what other shows would you recommend?

I would definitely recommend “Emo majok: African Aussie”. He has just returned from a successful tour of the Edinburgh fringe, which is the biggest arts festival in the world so he would be a delight to watch!

Describe your show in 3 words:

Award-winning show!
