FRINGEWORLD, Interview, on now

Five With Fringe | Gillian English | 2 Weddings & a Baby | FRINGEWORLD 2023

Gillian English is a hilarious comedian mostly known for her take on literature and Ancient history. This year she’s doing a memoir piece for FRINGEWORLD 2023. We caught up with her ahead of the show to see what we’re in for!

What is your show about?

This show is about my two weddings (to the same man) and my new baby. The weddings were on the opposite of the planet, and the baby tried to arrive 15 weeks early. Nothing about any of it was straightforward or easy, but at least it was also fully ridiculous.

Favourite part of the show, no spoilers!

My favourite part of the show is a deep dive into bridal shapewear. A living nightmare to achieve that dream bridal aesthetic.

What do you think people will get out of your show?

I think everyone who had a tumultuous start to their married life, or parenthood will be able to walk away from the show saying “Shit, well at least I’m not Gillian English!” It’ll be a great time to commiserate about the ups and downs of growing the whole way up, because you can’t be the baby if you have a baby!

Apart from your show, what other shows would you recommend?

Definitely check out Amy Hetherington’s show “Juggle”. She’s also a new mum, and talking about that work/life balance!

Interview, Summer Nights

Sum Up Summer Nights | Abi Russell & Holland Brooks | SUMMER NIGHTS 2023

Abi Russell and Holland Brooks are the brilliant writers behind the strangest rom-com you’ll ever see. Bad Feminist is playing at The Blue Room Theatre as part of Summer Nights 2023. We caught up with them to see what it’s all about.

What is your show about?

Bad Feminist is a comedic and critical reflection of sexual assault culture from the perspective of the bystander, in the style of a chick flick romantic comedy!

Audrey just got some, like, kinda bummer news about her perfect boyfriend. He might have done something really bad. Might have. Now everything is true and not true all at once. Audrey’s mind spins into her own personal Groundhog Day of every decision she could possibly make as she balances a terrifying personal and moral dilemma fit for the big screen.

Favourite part of the show, no spoilers!

Rhi Bryans hysterical to-camera-moments and hilarious political breakdowns absolutely make this show a wonderfully engaging side splitter.

How important is the Summer Nights program to the Perth theatre scene?

Summer Nights is a crucial platform and welcoming environment for independent theatre artists. The community of the Blue Room Theatre team and Summer Nights artists is warm and encouraging, and is an excellent hub for people to upskill and help each other make incredible work that is reflective of the very best of contemporary theatre arts and makers.

What inspired you to create this work?

I feel that being adjacent, or often directly, involved in situations around assault accusations and experiences is universal, whether it be through the media, or in personal life. I don’t know many people who haven’t been part of this conversation. But somehow, we don’t talk about it. We sit in our awkwardness and discomfort, and feel alone, despite the commonality of these experiences. We wanted to create a safe space where we bring levity to the topic, and be able to reflect on all of our places in this community of experience.

Describe your show in 3 words:

Rom-com, Cinematic, Sass

You can catch all the rom-com action at The Blue Room Theatre until 4th February 2023. TICKETS

FRINGEWORLD, Interview

Five With Fringe | Etta Delia | Buona Sera Signorina: Italian Music Meets Jazz | FRINGEWORLD 2023

Etta Delia is the frontswoman for an amazing band of Mediterranean and Aussie misfits who love to bring the sounds of Italy to life. We caught up with her ahead of the show to find out what we’re in for!

What is your show about?

Buona Sera Signorina is a show that is between a jazz performance and a stand-up comedy. We will be performing jazz renditions of very popular Italian tunes (‘That’s Amore’, ‘Mambo Italiano’, ‘Volare’) with a stellar line-up of jazz musicians – Steve Searle, Tony Celiberti, Manoli Vouyoucalos, Francisco Munoz, Asia Bisi, and Alessandra Nigro.

‘Buona Sera’ is also a show that talks about Italian Culture and Italian customs! For example, I have created an “Italian hand-gesture guide” and during the show, I prove that it is possible to have a full conversation with an Italian, without saying a word, just by using hand gestures. There will also be a “dance” moment and much, much more.

Favourite part of the show, no spoilers!

In “Buona Sera Signorina “ the audience has a principal role, so it will be surely amazing to see how our audience will react/interact with us!

What do you think people will get out of your show?

In this show, people are allowed to dance, to sing along, and to be “loud”…

Italians will identify with most of the stories and jokes we will talk about, but also non-Italians will, as they will probably remember that time when they went on that Italian Holiday and something bizarre happened…

On a deeper level, Buona Sera Signorina talks about a different Country and a different Culture. It is a hymn to embrace multiculturality in all aspects. It is a celebration of Italian heritage but also a tribute to all the Italians that came here many years ago and worked very hard to establish themselves so that today we can all be proud of being Italians! It is also an invitation to rejoice for the presence of ex-pats in Australia (not only Italians) as they bring cultural diversity and personal enrichment.

Apart from your show, what other shows would you recommend?

I would recommend all the shows that are part of the State of Play – The Fringe World Season programmed by the State Theatre Centre of WA

Simon Wood is a member of Acrobatch Circus who have teamed up with some incredible talents to bring you Carnie Brewed this FRINGEWORLD 2023. We caught up with him ahead of the show to see what it’s all about.

What is your show about?

Carnie Brewed brings together a local lineup of talented WA circus artists. We’ve worked hard to curate a variety of different circus disciplines to present a well rounded and fun circus cabaret. We are also working with CircusWA to support two emerging circus duos present new acts in the show. So come on down to the Freo Big Top for a night of slick circus entertainment!

Favourite part of the show, no spoilers!

The pass juggling act. I get to be on stage with two of my good mates and it’s always more fun performing with your friends and the act itself is a pretty silly and a lot of fun!

What do you think people will get out of your show?

I think they’ll be entertained. The nice thing about variety shows is that you get little tasters of lots of different skills and performance styles.

Apart from your show, what other shows would you recommend?

Any shows by YUCK Circus, Table for Two, Laser Kiwi, Circus Ricochet

FRINGEWORLD, Interview

Five With Fringe | Andrew Silverwood | I Really, Really, Really want a Zig-a-zig Ah…And Take A Nap | FRINGEWORLD 2023

Andrew Silverwood is a Fourth Wall favourite comedian. His latest show is playing as part of FRINGEWORLD 2023 and we can’t wait to see it.

What is your show about?

I love answering this a week before we open because the answer I give will definitey have changed before you see the show. It’s definitely going to be about me and my silly situations. I reckon the time I impulse bought a car from Marketplace will be in there too because I have to mention it becuse I’m trying to make it a tax write off, but honestly, I’m throwing the funniest material I’ve written in the last year at a wall and whatever sticks is what we’re running with.

I also host Britingo, I do know what that is.. It’s a British bingo themed theatre experience with an S Club 7 Megamix and the opportunity to win a croched ball bag, amongst other ridiculous things.

Favourite part of the show, no spoilers!

I like the bit of the show where I am holding the microphone and I have just finished talking a sentence and the audience laughs (no spoilers)

What do you think people will get out of your show?

Hopefully a giggle, I’m having a go at writing a show with meaning and purpose, but rather than being a Ted Talk, I’m planning to surround it with stupid situations and anecdotes to make you giggle.

Apart from your show, what other shows would you recommend?

Who’s asking? If you’re trying to impress a day date, go see Jon Madd’s Abracadabra and Other Useless magic words, you can learn magic. If you want to laugh at the nicest man on the planet, good news! Shash Kapur: From Mumbai with Love is a show my boy has poured a year of hard work into and if you want to see a real life version of a show that is on Paramount Plus, Dane Simpson’s Digeredoozy is a winner!

Of course, if you want to be blown over by some death defying circus set to 80s bangers, I also happen to the the MC of 80s Mixtape Cabaret, 7:50pm until 2 Feb.
