FRINGEWORLD 2023 | Ben Stevenson: Ratbag | 4 Stars

Review | Laura Money

Ben Stevenson: Ratbag is a solo stand-up show by Stevenson as he proves why he lives up to his nickname. Following the sudden death of his mother, Stevenson reflected on his childhood and came to the conclusion that his upbringing was far from normal. Told in an affable style, Stevenson recounts moments that defined his memories of his mum, and gives you a picture of this remarkable woman. He’s very funny – his bits don’t feel like traditional stand-up – joke, joke, joke, callback etc. Setting you at ease he gives a general picture of his current life and what it’s like living in Coff’s Harbour, being a doggy dad, and some sharp observations about Bonza airlines. Seriously, ask him about his views on bogan gender reveals!

But it is Stevenson’s hilarious recollections of his mother and his childhood that will leave you in stitches. See, Mum was a bit of a warrior – she told bedtime stories about the French conducting atomic experiments in the Pacific ocean, corrupt companies, and being an upstanding citizen. He remembers her going in to battle for him when short-changed in Bali and the stupid questions the organ donors asked when she was dying. Stevenson is a great comedian – he finds the funny in all situations – he’s not callous, there are absolutely heartfelt moments that will leave you on the verge of tears. Everything he says is funny – even the stuff most people would balk at. If you want a funny convo with a top bloke who justifyingly loves his Mum, this is the show for you.

You can catch Ben and his stories at The Laugh Resort until 4th February 2023. TICKETS
