FRINGEWORLD 2022 | Neil Diamond & His Songs | 4 Stars

Review | Laura Money

Head on down those ‘Brooklyn Roads’, raise a glass to ‘Cracklin’ Rosie’ and check out the ‘Beautiful Noise’ made by Brenton Fosdike & The Diamond Band as they pay tribute to Neil Diamond & His Songs Downstairs at the Maj as part of ACE’s Cabaret this FRINGEWORLD 2022. Fosdike is the ultimate entertainer, he’s full of energy and charisma, swaying, singing, and owning the stage resplendent in a ‘Cherry Cherry’ red sequinned top. It’s a night of pure entertainment from people who are at the top of their game.

Fosdike’s love of Nail Diamond is palpable – he reverently relays tidbits from Diamond’s life and the development of songs, relishing in the audience’s reactions as they cotton on to which song he’s describing. The origin stories of ‘Beautiful Noise’ and ‘Cracklin’ Rosie’ are particular highlights but Fosdike’s cheeky eye twinkle as he relays the story of ‘You Don’t Bring Me Flowers’ being mashed up by discjockeys back in the day adds a real depth to the piece. Fosdike soaks up the spotlight like no other, but is always in awe of his band and back up singers. The love that emanates from the stage is perhaps strongest during the duet of ‘You Don’t Bring Me Flowers’ but also constantly present, and you feel they are just all great friends jamming together.

Fosdike hilariously declares “if you haven’t noticed, I’m not actually Neil Diamond” tongue firmly in cheek, but whilst he may not be Diamond he has a really good go of it! Each song is performed perfectly, his stage presence is mesmerising, and his arrangements unique and bring out the best in the music legend’s accomplishments. With a stunning voice, complete with Diamond’s own signature gravelly tone, Fosdike is having the time of his life and this colours the show with a richness that will make you shout ‘I’m a Believer!’ So, get on down to Ace’s and sing-a-long to ‘Sweet Caroline’ because, let’s face it – no Neil Diamond tribute would be complete without it. Fosdike nails this segment perfectly and you’ll leave with his dulcet tones crooning you to sleep.

You can catch Brenton Fosdike & The Diamond Band at Ace’s Cabaret until 22nd January 2022. TICKETS
