Gavin Nicklette takes on the music of (some of) the great female singers in That’s What She Said (Stripped) and believe me, he sings the hell out of them! Nicklette is affable and charming – smiling warmly as he advises that there will not be any actual stripping involved – only the stripping back and simplification of the music.
This is masterfully done – Nicklette’s smooth voice trips over the music like a pink gin leaping over ice. Songs that are traditionally awful – if we’re being honest – are rendered beautiful by Nicklette. Katy Perry’s bubble gum shock pop hit ‘I Kissed A Girl’ takes on a new meaning in a smooth jazz arrangement complete with impressive piano solo. Nicklette is a real talent. The sheer musicianship on display is impressive. His knowledge of music and pure improvisational talent allow him to create a smooth and sublime jazz tune out of any genre.
Resplendent in gold and head full of black feathers, you could be forgiven if you were expecting some Britney lip sync or poorly sung Lady Gaga (Nicklette has been dubbed the Lady Gaga of jazz after all!) but what follows are heartfelt renditions of contemporary classics and sweet little stories about all of the pieces. Nicklette’s warmth radiates from the stage as he and his exceptionally talented bass & back up singers provide an afternoon you’ll never forget.
