FRINGEWORLD 2019: Murder? She Asked | 4 stars

Review | Laura Money

Enter the steamy miasma of the world of Friday (Grace Chapple) as she takes her obsession with murders and creates a case for herself out of thin air. Chapple’s Murder? She Asked is a hilarious take on the film noir murder mystery, complete with a cast of quirky characters – a hard-boiled detective, socialite, Lothario – all played to perfection by a rather talented young cast.

Friday is a loveable dag – obsessed with murder mysteries and the whole show is an homage to the genre that clearly comes from a place of love. Chapple’s jokes are hilarious – from cliches “It was hotter than a child left in a car with the windows rolled up” to the blunt “Thursday could be a real …” all delivered in a deadpan voice flatter than a pancake. Daniel Moxham is hilarious from the off – he plays all of the extra characters, each one more ridiculous than the rest. Chapple and Moxham have excellent chemistry – they play off each other beautifully and every cheeky little grin or exchange only adds to the overall experience.

Murder? She Asked is only a small show – it’s not slick but it is professional. Not only is it funny, there’s a really good mystery here too. I mean, your mind will be racing as you try to figure out who-dunnit along with Friday. If you’re looking through the FRINGEWORLD 2019 catalogue and not sure whether to take a punt on an independent show, I strongly suggest you do.

Go and see Murder? She Asked – it’s quirky, funny, clever and entertaining. It takes a vintage genre and renders it contemporary without losing any charm.
