Neal Portenza is a mad clown character created by Joshua Ladgrove, yet this form of anti-comedy has no conventions and that is what makes it brilliant. This clever comedian always leaves you guessing so be prepared for a roller coaster journey. This FRINGEWORLD 2018 show has Portenza wanting to be a mentalist – which leaves you wondering how this unique act will turn this to humour.
Neal Portenza: East Coast Eagle is a one man show but is all about the audience interaction. Portenza is unconventional with his crowd interactions and if you take him seriously you’d think he is rude. However, this insane character knows what he is doing to maximise the laughs – even if it comes from awkward tension created throughout the night. Portenza is the master of messing with people’s heads and he is aware of this – with him quoting that he has been labelled, “Both the best and the worst thing I’ve experienced at the same time.” This means that his is humour is a bit niche and not for the unadventurous sort.
When you look at the intense stare of Portenza, wearing a beret and a bit of clown styled make up – you see a comic tip toeing the conventions of being an entertainer. There is a sense that he embodies the late Andy Kaufman in getting laughter from shocking certain audience members. This is all part of the art form and this night it works like a treat – with Portenza getting more weirdness out of the audience than from himself! There is a bit of low moment when he states that he is quitting comedy. The audience appears to not believe him as all his claimed mentalist tricks are just wacky illusions, and yet he really is quitting comedy after the upcoming Melbourne International Comedy Festival!
