In Brief

FIVE WITH FRINGE | Lawrence Leung

LAWRENCE LEUNG is bringing his show VERY STRANGE THINGS to Perth for the first time ever. We made him welcome as he answered our “Five With Fringe” questions.

Describe your show in 3 words:

Freaky mind-bending fun.

What is your show all about?

VERY STRANGE THINGS is one of the weirder stand up comedy shows in the program. It’s about mystery, the unknown and is based partly on my ABC1 documentary series UNBELIEVABLE in which I travelled the globe, sleeping in haunted castles and hunting UFOs and testing psychics – a quest to see if the truth was really “out there” or just in our heads.
Fans of that TV series will know that I am obsessed¬†with the history and wicked techniques of psychic fraudsters. So the live show will also involve some fascinating mind-games, psychological illusions and uncanny coincidences like audience members guessing each others PIN numbers. I’ve taken the show around the country and it’s interesting to see some audience members freaking out. Someone once described VERY STRANGE THINGS as a ‘real-life episode of Twin Peaks’. I think that’s a compliment.

Favourite place for a post-show drink?

You tell me! This is my first FRINGE WORLD. I’m performing at the State Theatre Centre so I’m hoping there’s some good cafes and bars around there.

How would you describe your FW experience?

As a FRINGE WORLD newbie, I’m blown away by the variety of the program and how much Perth has embraced taking a chance on seeing something they have never experienced before.

5) Apart from your show, what other shows would you recommend?

Laura Davis: Ghost Machine. It’s an hour long existential crisis with a ghost on stage doing stand up. Brilliant stuff.

Yianni Agisilaou: Teaching a Robot To Love. A narrative comedy about artificial intelligence and what it means to be human.
