FRINGEWORLD 2018 | Infinite Jest Presents: The Nasty Show| 4.5 stars

Review | Kieran Eaton

Infinite Jest wants you to be shocked! To laugh guiltily in the late night provocative humour and this certainly does the trick.  Tonight’s MC and show creator Jez Watts brings a solid bunch of comedians to blow you away with humour that is the opposite of family-friendly. Tonight, four different acts came on with array of experience ranging from two to fifteen years in the stand-up circuit!  The tact taken by each act is vast – ranging from short jokes to off-the-cuff banter.

The night I attended, the opening act is the electric John Robertson. Robertson has just arrived back from the UK comedy scene and you can tell this experience makes him a king at owning the audience.  His long, peroxide hair stands out almost as much as his command of the stage.  You’re sometimes unsure of where he is going but this does not stop in his intense free styling nature that is infectiously delightful.  Grabbing an audience member’s Channel Nine cap – don’t expect him to be nice as if he finds an opportunity to slam somebody, he will!

The following person to test our sensibilities is a slightly dry, but cleverly crude Glen Grimwood. Very self-affecting is Grimwood, it’s easy to like him, no matter how gross he gets. It makes sense as he ends by saying that if you like him, go see his show called Unfuckable.

To keep this night interesting, the next performance comes from a young Alissia Marsh, displaying many interesting quirks. Her uniqueness works well in this variety night of inappropriateness. In her short set she displays and strong ability to put herself and her personality out there.

Finishing the night, a red-bearded Cody Lynch crafts big laughs with confidence. A slow-paced style, he knows well what ideas gain big laughs. However, Infinite Jest Presents: The Nasty Show will have different acts each night and so come if you want to expect the unexpected!
