Review | Amanda Lancaster
The Candybox is a soap-sudded, pink flamingo feathered hour of delight! The show centres around Australia’s Queen of Burlesque, Imogen Kelly and a range of other guests dependent on the night.
From the moment you walk in, you’re greeted with a fantastic energy as people swan around in silk bathrobes sipping at champagne while the MC directs through a megaphone.
Placing her fate in the hands of the audience, Kelly asks which show from the Candy Box selection they would like; the classy, shimmering burlesque of acts like Flutterby or Claire Du Lune or the more bizarre, off the wall acts such as A Rebellion to Beige or a Fight with a Poo. The audience of course inevitably pick the latter option and the result is hysterical!
In between each of these acts is a show by one of the many talented performers on the night. Expect to see slap-in-the-face energized burlesque, 1930’s feather and sparkle and then acts which will have you in stitches, often wondering what you just watched.
This isn’t a show to go to if you’re looking for run of the mill. The Candy Box is an in-your-face, larger than life extravaganza of the weird, the hilarious, the delicious and the occasionally slightly gross. It’s burlesque at its finest and as it should be.
