Review | Kieran Eaton
Manfred Yon is out-there, and he puts himself out there with his hour of improvised humour. Yon is an awkward character who embraces that slow-style of musings. FRINGEWORLD 2018 has many types of shows and this is for those who want to go on a surreal journey. This Perth comic expects nobody to escape his random conversations with the audience. If you are looking for a conventional stand up routine, this may not be your cup of tea!
There are these pieces of yellow paper and an assistant asks you to write what you would like the show to be about, before even sitting on your seat! If you think that is unusual then brace yourself for a bearded man, just wearing overalls and glasses that swears at the first audience member he sees. This is Yon entering on to some very kitsch music and he does not care, as you know that he is all about his daggy side. Luckily, he has a charm that makes you want to hug him rather than hate him when his funny falls flat.
Manfred Yon Loves You (The Audience) is a performance determined to push the boundaries of where laughter should come from. This eccentric comedian will say foolish things and try use any friendly audience member to his advantage – even when somebody expects him to do a “tight 5 about Donald Trump”, he will just say something absurd and deviate to a totally different tangent. You will be left either loving him or feeling like you have escaped a hostage situation with a mad man!
If you want to be taken on a non-linear, comedic ride into an existentialist comedy – then Manfred Yon Loves You (The Audience) is the one man show that should be on the top of your FRINGEWORLD 2018 list.
