Brace yourselves, Perth because we have the hottest show in town heading this way as part of FRINGEWORLD 2018. Settling in to the new and exciting precinct, The Ice Cream Factory, Club Swizzle is the Australian devised sister show to the wonderful La Soiree, which has been delighting Perth audiences for three years running. Club Swizzle is a little looser, a little more intimate, and a whole lot raunchier!
Set in an edgy warehouse, the old ice-cream factory (and later fish market to a whole generation of Perth locals) is transformed into a sultry cabaret – complete with full bandstand, finely crafted wooden cabinetry, cozy tables, and of course, a fully stocked bar. The show is hosted by the inimitable Reuben Kaye who will dazzle you with his exceptional showmanship and a lot of bling!
The acts are more edgy – hearkening back to the circus/cabaret of yore, when men performed dazzling tricks and women do the same with sultry and sexy poise. The Swizzle Boys are cheeky, irreverent and fun, and epitomise the show.
Darling of Club Swizzle, Laurie Hagen joined La Soiree in Denmark and is delighted to be in Perth for the first time.
I fell into the cabaret scene – I was in a play about Christine Keeler in London, I was playing a showgirl. So I went to do some research and was pleasantly surprised by the art-form and how creative people were and what it had to offer.
Hagen developed a routine and started with The Hurley-Burley act and became intrigued by the ‘reverse strip’ – an iconic burlesque act. Club Swizzle is one of those wonderful shows that encourages the left-of-centre and the humour that is so ubiquitous in burlesque.
Club Swizzle is such a team show. We’re very much involved in each other’s acts and the grand finale of the boys doing their hoop act is just one of those addictive numbers. It doesn’t matter how many times you’ve seen it, you just want to watch it! It’s very exciting!
So go and check out Club Swizzle as part of FRINGEWORLD 2018 for an evening of flirting, fun, and festivity!
